Love of Place, Part III
Stockbridge: Part three of my reminiscing about the places I’ve lived is the only out of New York State.  I lived in Stockbridge for half of each week for the summer I worked as a curatorial intern at Chesterwood, the home of Daniel Chester French (I spent the other half living with my parents and working at Olana- two amazing artist’s homes in one summer!).  I lived in a former gardener’s...

Quality Over Quantity
Yesterday I hosted the first ever “Columbia County Educators Meet and Share” event at the historical society.  I arranged the event for several reasons.  First, as I planned a series of outreach and site visit programs for schools, I wanted to have an opportunity to actually talk with teachers in the county.  Sure, its one thing to plan for the state standards and the curriculum, but I...

Love of Place, Part 2
For the second installment of reminiscing on places I’ve lived, I will focus on Malone.  I only lived in Malone for three months, while I was student teaching.  It was my first apartment, but also one of the worst I’ve lived in.  I moved in during a week of bitter cold, which was certainly not welcoming.  After growing up in the Hudson valley, and eating out quite a bit, living in a place with...

Love of Place, Part 1
As I drove through Hudson this evening, past our old apartment, I got to thinking about how I missed living in Hudson, but also how when we lived in Hudson I missed living in Catskill. As I thought more about it, there are a lot of things I miss about each place I’ve lived (yes, even Malone).  So, in the order in which I lived in them: Potsdam: -The proximity to Canada* -The Fields...

Masquerade Ball Decorating
After work on Friday, I joined Kjirsten and Nick, Geoff, Greg, and Sarah, to decorate for Kjisrten’s 30th birthday masquerade party.  We used an impossible amount of Christmas tree lights, lots of sparkely things, and the paper balls I made last Sunday. It came out kind of magical and surreal.  The perfect setting for a wonderful party on Saturday night— photos to follow.

whatiwore: WhatIWore: Its a sad story and most of you have lived to tell it. You have a favorite thrift/vintage store. Its so cheap and so great that you vow to never tell a soul about it. Your little secret. And then, one day, you noticed some soaped out windows and a For Lease sign on the door! What?! No!! It can’t be true?! I saw my two favorite vintage stores in Indiana close in 2009....

TV for Museum Nerds
On the way home this evening, I half listened as the people on the radio mindlessly chatted about mindless tv shows.  It got me to thinking— I’m not necessarily totally against the idea of reality tv, but it hurts my head to watch such stupid, crazy people.  I don’t surround myself with people like this in real life, so why would I want to watch them on tv? I then had a...

The past and the present, together in one image,... →
These are really fantastic.  They made me think about how, when I drive/walk by the Greene County courthouse (when it is not under scaffolding), it makes me smile to see people sitting on the stone wall by the intersection, just as they did in the photo my dad had from c. 1930.  If you look closely there, the stone is actually worn down, from so many years of people sitting there, watching the...
